Mackinac Island has been the location of principle photography for numerous feature films. According to the late Bill Rabe of Mackinac Island, the first was a 1912 silent film in which pirates sailed into the straits and came ashore to pillage. In 1947, THIS TIME FOR KEEPS, starring Esther Williams and Jimmy Durante, was filmed here, and during the 1950's and 1960's five more feature films were made: THE CROWNING EXPERIENCE (1959) starring Murile Smith, Ann Buckles, Robert Anderson; DECISION AT MIDNIGHT (1963) starring Martin Landau and Walter Fitzgerald; VOICE OF THE HURRICANE (1964) starring William Close, Reginald Owen, Murile Smith; EL CONDOR (196?); and HOFFMUNG (196?). In 1980, Universal Studios filmed SOMEWHERE IN TIME starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Plummer, and in 1997, the independent film MATCHBOX CIRCUS TRAIN was filmed here.
A complete sound stage/studio resides here on the
island. Built in the 1950's by the MRA (Moral Rearmament Association -- "Up With People"), the state-of-the-art sound stage was the second largest in the world at the time of its construction (MGM's was the largest), and is still in excellent condition.
Over the coming years MACKINAC ISLAND FILM COMPANY hopes to produce feature films utilizing the scenic beauty of this island, the convenience and utility of the production facilities, and filmmaking talents around the world.
